Background of the Study

Innovation hubs are collaborative spaces where entrepreneurs, start-ups, and small businesses come together to foster creativity, technological innovation, and economic growth. These hubs play a pivotal role in diversifying economies, especially in regions where traditional sectors such as agriculture or manufacturing dominate. In Lafia Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State, the emergence of innovation hubs has been part of a broader effort to stimulate economic diversification by supporting technological innovation, entrepreneurship, and the development of new industries.

The concept of innovation hubs has gained traction in recent years, as they provide an environment conducive to networking, knowledge exchange, and access to funding. These hubs also offer entrepreneurs the tools and expertise needed to scale their businesses. However, there is limited research on how innovation hubs have influenced economic diversification in rural and semi-urban areas such as Lafia. This study seeks to assess the impact of innovation hubs in Lafia LGA, focusing on their contribution to the diversification of the local economy.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Innovation hubs have the potential to drive economic diversification in Lafia LGA by supporting the growth of non-traditional sectors like technology, creative industries, and digital services. However, the actual impact of these hubs on economic diversification in the region remains underexplored. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the role of innovation hubs in promoting economic diversification and identifying factors that influence their success.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of innovation hubs on economic diversification in Lafia LGA.

  2. To evaluate how innovation hubs have supported the growth of new industries and sectors in the region.

  3. To identify the challenges faced by innovation hubs in Lafia LGA and recommend strategies for improvement.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How have innovation hubs in Lafia LGA contributed to economic diversification?

  2. What sectors have been most influenced by innovation hubs in Lafia LGA?

  3. What challenges do innovation hubs face in promoting economic diversification, and how can they be overcome?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Innovation hubs have significantly contributed to economic diversification in Lafia LGA.

  2. Innovation hubs have facilitated the growth of new industries, particularly in technology and the creative sector.

  3. Innovation hubs in Lafia LGA face challenges related to funding, infrastructure, and business support services.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it will provide insights into the role of innovation hubs in fostering economic diversification in Lafia LGA. The findings will inform policymakers, entrepreneurs, and development agencies on how to enhance the effectiveness of innovation hubs in promoting sustainable economic growth. Additionally, the study will contribute to the broader discourse on innovation and entrepreneurship in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on innovation hubs in Lafia LGA and their impact on economic diversification over the past five years. Limitations include the potential bias in data collected from hub participants and challenges in accessing information about the long-term outcomes of innovation hub projects.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Innovation Hubs: Collaborative spaces that provide support for entrepreneurs, start-ups, and small businesses, often focused on technology and innovation.

  • Economic Diversification: The process of expanding the range of industries or sectors that contribute to a region's economy, moving away from reliance on traditional sectors.
